Notes: Installing ExifTool - You need sudo yum install perl-ExtUtils-MakeMaker before the Install instructions work for http://www.sno.phy.queensu.ca/~phil/exiftool/install.html

I first decided to use exiftool to find the data I needed:

exiftool -UserDefinedText -a filename.mp3 [where -UserDefinedText is the specific metat field and -a shows all of the fields]

Arduino Tweet Tool

I'm attempting to build something that will send a message about an alarm over ethernet.  I currently have the following:

  • Arduino Uno
  • Ethernet Shield
  • Breadboard with switch and resistors

Currently the attempt is to get the current UTC from a NTP and send a tweet when the button is pressed warning of the alarm along with the time.  Ultimately I will connect an optioisolator to the 12volt circut activating the alarm and have it trigger the same digital pin read to send the tweet.

Thinking about Running CAT5 in your home or church?  Here are some tips and tricks to help get the job done.

  1. Know the different IEEE standards for plugs -

It's really easy to just to make up the color code on the cable you're running but what about when someone comes along to modify or upgrade the system, following regular standards will assist them in figuring out what you did.  The IEEE standards with RJ45 plugs are T568A and T568B and look like this:

Digital Signage in the Church Setting

The latest project has been trying to get a digital sign up and running in the church.  I thought I'd give a little breakdown of the project.

The Concept: Create a Digital Sign that can list church activities, announcements and other important information.  It must be cheap, easy to update and be upgradable for the future.  It also must have an anti-theft device to dissuade someone from trying to steal it since it is in an open area.

FUMC Rose Window

Sitting in the balcony at First United Methodist Church in Corvallis has it's perks.  None more than the glory of the stained glass windows.  I think J.J. Abrams would love this lense flare.  Not to mention the beautiful music from Oregon State University's Chamber Choir at their President's Concert.  What a great way to kick off the summer.

UniFi Systems

Unifi System

I've installed a series of Wireless Networks at the lowest cost possible for business and individuals.  Previously, the best systems were business grade routers that were hard to setup but once setup, never needed to be rebooted or touched.  This always limited you though in the scope of what you could cover.  Expansion was difficult the say the least and complicated guest networking and payment were super challenging to setup.

Fundamental Terminal Commands for the Linux/Unix Dummy

I've been dabbling with the terminal for about 10 years now ever since I built my first linux box.  I remember watching technicians use the terminal to do all sorts of cool things that I could never understand.  I still catch myself having to review some of the basic elements so I thought I'd create a very simple blog post listing key commands to get you going.

This is my own tutorial so I don't forget for the future.  Stole directly from http://drupal.org/node/297496 with modifications for my useage.  I currently use dreamhost and enjoy their SSH access to the servers my sites are hosted on.

UPDATE: I now added Drush to my SSH access so you only need to run one command to backup and update.

$drush pm-update

The following is for those with limited SSH or access to the host only via web/ftp.
